Frequently Asked Questions...

Here are the answers to questions that come up a lot but please email me if you have any more queries about Hpnobirthing® classes in Dublin, Louth or Meath, I'd be really happy to chat to you.

I'm a bit apprehensive about hypnosis...will I loose control?

I wondered about this one myself and the simple answer is...No! Try and separate stage/entertainment hypnosis and hypnotherapy in your mind as they're totally different.  In hypnotherapy you're in a state of deep relaxation but you still have full control and can get up and walk away any time.  Think of it as when you find yourself staring out the window in a daydream trance.

I've had a terrible birthing experience in the past...will this work for me?

Yes. One of the great things about Hypnobirthing is it really helps mums just like you who've had a bad experience.  Throughout the course you will be brought through a process of replacing that fear and anxiety with positivity, self-belief and clam.  The Hypnobirthing founder, Marie Mongan, divised the programme after she herself had had an unpleasant experience. You can read more about her and how Hypnobirhting came about here.

What stage in my pregnancy should I start?

You can start to practice hypnobirthing at any stage of your pregnancy - you and your baby will both thrive on the relaxation.  I usually recommend mums to start their classes around 24 weeks and its best, but not mandatory, to have a few weeks in between sessions to allow the subconscious mind take in the information and adapt and also to allow you to get practicing. That said, I’m happy to talk to women later in their pregnancy.

Does it guarantee an easy birth?

No. There are many factors that can affect a birth, some of which are outside our control.
But I can guarantee a more positive pregnancy and birthing experience then had you not practiced Hypnobirthing®. Around 65-70% of HypnoBirthing mums find they don't need any form of pain relief. Nearly all the mums in this category simply don't experience any pain - just pressure.  Around a further 20-25% only require something mild, like gas and air.  The remaining 5-10% usually fall into what we call 'special circumstances', where medical intervention is required. But even in those situations Hypnobirthing is really beneficial to help Mum and baby stay relaxed.  The aim of HypnoBirthing is not a completely pain-free and picture-perfect 'natural' birth (although that is possible).
It is to have a calmer, easier, more comfortable birth - where you are in control - and in a way that most mirrors Nature.

I’m not sure my husband/partner is going to go for this...

Its normal for Dads/birthing partners to be a bit apprehensive at first - they usually become the biggest hypnobirthing advocates of all!  All I ask is for them to be curious, have an open mind and support mum’s wishes.  They don’t have to do anything they’re uncomfortable with. I can guarantee if they do attend the course with an open mind they’ll pick up a lot of skills to use during labour and will feel more connected with the pregnancy.  I’m happy to hear from any Dads and/or birthing partners if they would like to contact me privately.

Why is it so expensive?

When you think about it, its not expensive at all.  Break it down per session and take into account that I’m fully insured and have travel costs for Hypnobirthing® classes in Dublin, Louth and Meath and/or venue hire.  A qualified hypnotherapist will usually charge €100 per hour.  Plus you’ll use Hypnobirthing® for any subsequent pregnancy so you’ll get real value out of it! If you and your birthing partner are unemployed please let me know and I can discuss the possibility of reduced rates.

I’ve seen a home study course  - why not just do this?

There are many permutations of hypnobirthing, with varied claims, on the market.  Hypnobirthing® The Mongan Method is the original method and the only one attached to the Hypnobirthing Institute.  This is significant as Certified Hypnobirthing® The Mongan Method practitioners are part of a global network (45 countries) of certified practitioners made up of medical professionals, certified hypnotherapists, holistic therapists and Mum’s like myself who’ve used Hypnobirthing to birth their own babies.

Mongan Method Hypnobirthing® Practitioners are also required to undergo continuous professional development to keep their certification.  Strict criteria must be fulfilled to renew certification annually - Mums have every right to request sight of the renewed certification.

There are many imitations so clients are advised to look for the Hypnobirthing® The Mongan Method Certification.  Most Certified Hypnobirthing® practitioners will also keep their group sizes small to ensure everyone gets the right attention and ensure Mums are supported right through their pregnancy - not just for a random weekend.  For this reason there is no authorised home-study course.
