When your baby is diagnosed with a life limiting condition

Your care team should give you all the information you need on the diagnosis and how it will affect baby and whether the diagnosis is compatible with life outside of your womb.

Under of the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution, women in Ireland are not afforded the choice of terminating the pregnancy and many are forced to travel to the UK for termination.  You can get more information on terminations in the UK from the British Pregnancy Advisory Service

 

If you choose to continue your pregnancy it can be helpful to try an focus on the life inside you as your baby is kicking and living inside.  Taking part in prenatal bonding exercises and memory making can be lovely ways of helping you through this very difficult time.  Journaling and documenting your pregnancy can also provide you with lovely memories.

 

It can also be helpful to put time into discussing birth preferences with your health care team and planning the birth of your baby.

 

And some women take comfort from donating their baby’s breastmilk to help other babies in need through the Human Milk Bank.

 

As a bereavement doula I can help support you through any stage and all stages of this extremely difficult time.  I would be honored to accompany and companion you and your partner through the birth of your baby or indeed through termination of the pregnancy.
